Filters

Below is the original photo. I applied the photo filter I used was cyan at 25%. Just a slight change but I think it definitely made it brighter.

Below is the original photo. I used the photo filter sepia at 100%. I love using the sepia color!

Dodge and burn

Above is the original photo. It seemed kinda dark so I decided to highlight what I thought the main parts of the picture would be. So I used the dodge tool on the rent signs, as well as the lights below. I used the dodge tool on the sidewalk sign, and other parts in the background.

Photoshop color and light adjustments

Above is the original photo. I changed the exposure on it, so the sun would not be so overpowering, and the buildings were darker. I couldn't completely get rid of the glare of the sun because it is so dominating, but I think it is an improvement.

Above is the original photo. I do like the original but I added a cooling filter, which makes it a blue color. I thought it had a nice effect. I love using the different photo filters.

Photoshop practice

Well I've taken graphic design, so I am used to photoshop. What I did was move the image of New York onto the airplane photo and I used the magic wand tool to take out the sky of the original picture of New York to get the clouds from the airplane photo. I love the magic wand...it comes in very handy! I did crop the airplane photo as well because there was part of the window in it, as well as a reflection. I could not get all of the reflection out. One thing with the cropping tool that is frustrating is that I can only move the selection of the cropping up and down not expand side to side. I also did feather the New York photo to make it a little softer.

Landscape photos

I have uploaded some of my favorite landscape pictures. It is always a great subject to shoot because they all turn out differently especially depending on the day. The first image below is the Connecticut River. I really like this image because it is very rich in color, and the time of day makes it very bright. The second photo was taken at a lake. (Can't remember the name!) I love the colors in this photo. The water appears to be almost purple. It was taken right when the sun set. I also like the different colors in the sky. I think it makes it overall interesting to look at!

Rule of thirds

So I took pictures of my dog because he is probably one of my favorite subjects to shoot! I think the rules of thirds is interesting. Comparing these two photos I would have to say I like the second shot on the right compared to straight on. I think its interesting that you can get almost a completely different shot just by moving the subject to one side or the other of a photo. I think knowing this rule, I am going to be more conscious about it, and try it out more often! I'm sure I have done it in the past, but did not know the name for it! (I had to shrink the photos to make them come out side by side. Hopefully it works!)

Composition and aesthetic

Another composition style that we have not discussed is diagonals. Basically you could take something that is straight up and down and turn your camera to the side to give it a more diagonal look to it. Using this composition can give a more dynamic look. I am familiar with the word aesthetic because of art classes taken in the past. Aesthetics basically is what is beautiful or pleasing to the eye. Aesthetic is what draws you to the picture or painting. One quote I found that I like is the following:

"Art is the imposing of a pattern on experience, and our aesthetic enjoyment is recognition of the pattern." Alfred North Whitehead
